What are you currently reading?

The Boy who Steals Houses CG Drews (Orchard Books) 4th April 2019

I’ve JUST started my ARC of this book about a pair of abandoned boys who do anything to survive including breaking into empty homes to snatch a night of someone else’s normality only to find themselves drawn into a family for the first time in forever.
As someone with a brother on the autistic spectrum like Sam has in Avery, I’m probably going need some tissues reading this.

We took advantage of the free audiobook listen thanks to World Book Day ( until 31st March so hurry if you want to try) as I’ve been trying to get Littlefae to read this for AGES! Now she has said we must read the book because the audiobook doesn’t have illustrations, and she is LOVING the kooky humour and detailed illustrations!

What did you recently finish reading?

I’ve been struggling this week with time to read thanks to a teething and growth spurt from Tinyfae coupled with preparations for Littlefae’s birthday yesterday.

I made and decorated a 3 tier, 3 flavoured Isadora Moon inspired cake, it’s not Instagram worthy but she loved it!!

To Night Owl from Dogfish Holly Goldberg Sloan & Meg Wolitzer (Egmont 2019)

This ode to friendship and twist on the Parent Trap is a great little read on many levels and is ideal for young writers and readers to study in whole or excerpt for many reasons. It is very American for British readers (we don’t do Summer Camp) but still resonates on topics of adolescence, friendship and family.
It’s very pacey due to the epistolary structure, the entire novel is conducted through short emails between the girls and other characters that by design means we get snappier summaries of the action, but also the reliability and characterisation of narrators is explored gently yet clearly and compared much more easily than across other more traditional novels.

Shifty McGifty & Slippery Sam: The Cat Burglar – Tracey Corderoy & Steven Lenton (Nosy Crow 2015)

We are moving into the highly illustrated young reader Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sams with Littlefae and she wanted to revisit why they suddenly go from naughty burglar dogs turned bakers to baker dogs who solve mysteries on the side!

The Paper & Hearts Society – Lucy Powrie (Hachette Childrens) 13th June 2019

I was very excited to see this pop up in my options on a review scheme I belong to- ok I squealed as I never thought I would get an early copy otherwise.
Lucy Powrie is a super exciting voice to emerge into Teen & YA writing considering she literally is a voice of the age group being written for. This bibliophile story about being tired of trying to fit in, yet being brave to try something new is one I’m looking forward to.

The Magical Kingdom Of Birds: The Missing Fairy Wrens- Anne Booth Illustrated by Rosie Butcher

Littlefae is so into the Magical Kingdom Of Birds that her forest School leader put on a whole session about birds and magic inspired by her games with her friends inspired by the book.
This is the 3rd Book in the series where Maya (who has physical disabilities) travels via her magic colouring book to the fairy kingdom to save the fairies and birds from the wicked Lord Astor. Littlefae was so happy to receive it for her Birthday and it is our next read aloud adventure!
