Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly book blogging initiative hosted by The Artsy Reader Girl with new themes each week.
This weeks theme is Inspirational/Thought Provoking quotes.
This was actually tougher than I thought!
You may be surprised if you read my reviews that I don’t make a habit of writing down nice quotes whilst reading. I tend to choose the most apt quotations after I’ve formed what I want to say in the review. Though it may be a good idea to take it up!!
All bar two of these are from relatively recent MG reads, but two classics are in there for the love of the resonance
Strong Independent Female Wisdom

‘And if I do get locked in a tower, I’ll find my own way out, thank you very much.’
The Star Spun Web– Sinéad O’Hart
When anxiety is clouding your thinking

Despite her fear Suzy closed her eyes and forced herself to breathe deeply. It wasn’t much, but it calmed the storm inside her mind just long enough to let her hear the thought that had been there all along.
The train to Impossible places. PG Bell.
When I need to believe

“Oh Come on Prue; the odds are better if you believe it’s possible! Just believe.”
Wildspark– Vashti Hardy
Sage life advice to be prepared
Darkling!…Now did you remember your…Oh and some spare pairs of knickers in case any get eaten by vultures or anything..’
Amelia Fang and the Half Moon Holiday- Laura Ellen Anderson
To never doubt your worth simply because of your past, pedigree or origins.
“Sometimes glass glitters more than diamonds because it has more to prove.” – The Truth- Terry Pratchett
To understand what it means to be loved
“Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”
The Velveteen Rabbit, Margery Williams
To understand that it’s better to be free than live in a gilded cage
The kitten cannot take your name from you Maximilian.’…’as far as your life well would you really change what you have now to be in that kitten’s place?’
Maximilian thought about this. He thought about the kitten…it would live it’s entire life on a comfortable cushion in the window sill of Arlington Grove. It would never chase mice or see a Theatre show, or climb over rooftops or have a friend like Oscar.
…‘A cat needs space to feel alive’ and he started to feel sorry for the kitten with a bow.’
Max The Detective Cat– Sarah Todd Taylor
To remind that jealousy says more about the jealous than the envied.

‘But jealous, bitter people don’t suddenly find that those feelings go away when what they envy becomes theirs. they simply find something else to be jealous and bitter about, because it was never about what the other person had. It’s about what they themselves lack.’
A Pinch Of Magic– Michelle Harrison
When I need a Blakean style metaphor about existence

The sky dances in the water, the silver moon and the firefly stars and the arc of the Milky Way. I see the whole universe in the tiny puddle and I smile.
The House with Chicken Legs- Sophie Anderson
When you consider going to IKEA with your other half.

‘I don’t know what it is about that shop- it brings out the worst in everyone.’ muttered Virgo.
Who Let The Gods Out? Maz Evans
These are all great choices! 😍. I enjoyed reading lots of them too 😊

Thank you, i struggled a bit this week then just decided to pick up a few books that I loved and flick through.
The difficult thing with this was choosing a good quote that wasn’t spoilers!

I was initially going to skip it because I knew I’d find it hard to find enough! Which is why I ended up going for a shorter list 💜

Ah but those four are very good ones, glad you went for it 💜

Oh my heart, The Velveteen Rabbit, I couldn’t even get through reading the quote completely because I’d be bawling. I’m happy to see The House With Chicken Legs, I really enjoyed that one and I’m a sucker for all things Baba Yaga.

I know I was sobbing typing it out!! I love the House with Chicken legs on a soul level, There were some tearjerkers from that too, but I decided to go with something a little different (and less spoilery!)

Yes to finding your own way out of the tower. I love that sentiment.

I love how it twists back on the Princess trope!

This is a great one for those of us of a certain age: “Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”
Beautiful!

The cover for Wildspark is lovely. Thanks for sharing your list. I wasn’t familiar with some of these books and I need to check them out. 👍✨

Thank you, the book is fantastic too, I’m posting my review for it tomorrow as it’s released Thursday.

I don’t know why but the quote from The Truth hit me the hardest from the whole list!

Pratchett was a master of words and feelings. whenever he wrote about class, lack of privilege and about those who didn’t feel worthy he was a firestorm of inspiration- this quote is so powerful.

This makes me so tempted to read his works! I sadly haven’t read his books yet. 😦

I strongly recommend you do- they are wonderfully witty, scathingly satirical, heartfelt and soul searching all at the same time.
I would start with the Death stories (Mort is first ) or Guards stories (Guards guards) if this quote resonates with you.

Thanks for the recs! Consider them added to my TBR! 🙂

Love that quote from A Pinch of Magic! I realized that I didn’t keep track of the good quotes I found while reading as well as I thought I did 😛 But I still thought I did okay with the quotes I could remember!

It’s really deep! Yes I ended up grabbing books I knew had great quotes and did it that way. Will ‘endeavour’ (haha) to write them down now!!

It’s easy to track if you have a kindle (with the highlight option) but I need to get better of keeping track of ‘offline’ quotes lol 😂

Ah I don’t use a kindle sadly, but that’s good to know!!

How long did it take you to write this week’s post? I found the prompt pretty easy. It’s so interesting to see how different people react to the same prompt. I’m sure there are other prompts I’ve struggled with that you found easy. 🙂

I had a few books/authors in mind then collected some other quotes over a couple of days but I didn’t sit down until last night to get the last few to make it up to 10.
I think it was more daunting considering what I wanted to communicate or highlight than the finding itself though.

Oh this is a great list! And I love that WKTGO/IKEA one (I hate IKEA, but I seem to be in the minority – people go there for a nice trip out?!)
I’ve only recently started nitubg quotes from books that I like as I read. Really just for me, rather than for the blog, though I have found them helpful when reviewing eveb though I don’t always include them in it.

Yes, I always intend to do it but I get distracted by the story!! Luckily I have a good memory for whereabouts a nice quote happened in the book so I can flip back later but I really should make my life easier!!!
I don’t mind IKEA but with my mum (and Tinyfae she’s fine with it) if my husband or Littlefae are along it’s like a slow descent through Dante’s inferno!

I have a shocking memory, I can barely remember character’s names after finishing a book let alone where a quote is! But also, I do like to read back through them a while after reading – so cheering, like little snapshots of friends!

It’s not as good as before the children but I have a semi eidetic memory when it comes to written things which is very lucky when I’m lazy and was a godsend when I did exams!

I must have had a good memory at some point as, like you, at school it all just went in – I’ve never known how to revise. Unfortunately, I would seriously struggle if I had to do any sort of exam now! Brain like a sieve!

I like how you used quotes for different occasions. The Velveteen Rabbit is a sweet book.
